Friday night skirmish a real stress reliever Print E-mail
PHYSICAL exercise is well known as the best form of stress relief, but a group of Hobart business professionals are taking their relaxation a bit further than a visit to the gym.

A group of 15 friends regularly gather on Friday after work or on the weekend to chase each other around the bush brandishing sci-fi-style phaser guns. They are among those who have become addicts of laser skirmish, which was introduced into the state 12 months ago.

Laser skirmish is a fast-paced tactical team game played outside. Each team is equipped with infra-red weapons and sensors. Players shoot an infra-red beam, similar to the one used on a TV remote control.

Among the group is an accountant, a shop owner, a public servant and a police officer. They heard about the game and decided to give it a go and now skirmish once a month. Hobart accountant Ingrid Wolfe, of South Hobart , loves the game and is not concerned about being the only female in the group. "It is a fantastic way to motivate you to exercise," she said. "Working as a team is also lots of fun and you begin to develop tactical maneuvers." Ms Wolfe makes sure she is well prepared with sturdy boots with ankle support to protect her from the rough bush terrain. "I like to strap my ankles to make sure they are protected," she said.

Missions are team orientated and teams are provided with jungle-green uniforms. Since starting, owner-operator Jonathon Simonetis has catered to corporate groups and birthday parties. "Laser skirmish is all about having fun” " he said.

A 2-1/2 hour game costs $40 and includes clothing and phasers (minimum of 10 people). Mr Simonetis is starting introductory sessions, which will be run on Sunday mornings at the Lea, on the south-bound side of the Southern Outlet. There is no minimum number of players required for these sessions and the cost is $35. Bookings are essential
